The European Commission has greenlit a third round of IPCEI projects (Important Projects of Common European Interest) aimed at advancing hydrogen infrastructure development across Europe within the framework of EU state aid regulations.
Among these projects, ENERTRAG will play a significant role in the “IPCEI Hy2Infra” initiative with its innovative “Electrolysis Corridor East Germany” project boasting a capacity of 185 MW. This groundbreaking endeavor, situated across two sites in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg, will feature large-scale electrolysers as well as support infrastructure such as H2 pipelines, hydrogen storage facilities, and transhipment terminals for liquid organic hydrogen carriers. The electrolysis corridor will channel approximately 15,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually into the “doing hydrogen” H2 pipeline, strategically positioned to optimize regional development and leverage renewable resources efficiently. By converting surplus electricity into hydrogen, ENERTRAG not only enhances local value creation but also contributes to sustainable energy utilization.
The “IPCEI Hy2Infra” initiative, jointly proposed and endorsed by seven EU member states—France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Slovakia—aims to bolster domestic hydrogen production, reducing reliance on natural gas and aligning with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan.
This approval marks a pivotal milestone for ENERTRAG, bringing the electrolysis corridor project closer to fruition. Anticipation surrounds the forthcoming funding decisions from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) for the eastern German corridor.
Dr. Tobias Bischof-Niemz, Divisional Head of New Energy Solutions, expressed his satisfaction with the funding approval, underscoring the electrolysis corridor’s significance in fortifying Germany’s hydrogen infrastructure. With substantial electrolyser capacities in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, ENERTRAG holds a noteworthy market share of approximately 12% in Germany, thereby facilitating the provision of essential hydrogen to industrial clients.
