Fargo North Boys Basketball Begins Title Defense – KVRR Local News

FARGO, N.D.–  EDC Basketball tips off tomorrow night. The Fargo North Spartans were a exciting team with a lot of potential coming into last season; this season they come in as defending state champions. The Spartans were must watch basketball last season with one of the most exciting and entertaining styles of play across the state. This year’s team return last year’s State Tournament MVP, Jeremiah Sem as well as his younger brother Matthew who began to show flashes of greatness down the stretch last season. The whole team is a brotherhood however and they come into the season knowing that the rest of the state will be looking to take down the defending champs.

“If I’m being honest it was a little bit of an unexpected finish for us last year. I thought we were a talented team but you know I didn’t come into the season thinking we were gonna be the State Champs but we’re excited, we bring back pretty much everybody from last year’s team. We graduated two seniors. I’m very excited about this season but I also know that it’s going to be a grind and the EDC is going to be a very difficult conference again this year as well. There is a lot of talent out here,” said head coach, Travis Hoeg.

Matthew Sem spoke about practicing against his older brother in the offseason; “Yup, that helped me a lot because he also coached me a lot too. He’s helped me with my game and going up against someone who is older than you and has learned more than you, and just getting to learn more from him, that means a lot,” said Matthew Sem.

“You know, I think Matthew had a bit of a coming out party at the State Tournament too you know. I think it was the State Championship Game where Jeremiah got in a little bit of foul trouble and had to come sit on the bench for a while for us in that second half and I thought Matthew did just one heck of a job out there taking control of the team and becoming a scorer for us and really hitting some big shots for us. Yeah, and you’re gonna see.. in my opinion in fact, since practice started, Matthew Sem has been the best player in our gymnasium,” said Hoeg.
