Germany’s Busiest Airport to Close for Departures Due to Worker Strike

Germany’s Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is closing to passengers with departures scheduled for Thursday, March 7 in anticipation of several worker strikes this week.

“Fraport is asking all passengers starting their journey in Frankfurt not to come to the airport on March 7 and to contact their airline,” the airport said in a statement.

Reuters reports that the country’s Verdi union has organized a strike of security staff in addition to Lufthansa ground staff. Lufthansa is Germany‘s flag carrier and the second-largest airline in Europe when combined with its subsidiaries.

The strikes will also include train drivers across Germany. Together, the planned worker strikes are expected to impact hundreds of thousands of travelers this week.

According to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com, FRA is already experiencing disruption.

More than 50 Wednesday departures have been canceled at FRA, with another 75 departures being delayed as of 3 p.m. local time. Another 47 arriving flights have been canceled and 26 have been delayed.

Last month, Lufthansa canceled hundreds of flights amid a labor strike at multiple airports across Germany, including FRA.
