Irish horse racing tips: Johnny Ward’s bets bets for Sunday

We have two Irish fixtures to look forward to on Sunday, and Thurles on Monday, which takes us nicely into the Cheltenham Festival.

I will be busy throughout the week – my tips for each day will be available on – and, predictably, I’m expecting another huge performance from Ireland, though part of me certainly wants Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls and some of the British trainers to record Grade One winners throughout the week!

Be lucky, and please remember to gamble responsibly.

2.32 Naas: No Looking Back

Getting 9lb off No Looking Back, Irish Point should clearly win this, but the selection appeals each-way in a tidy little race.

He was brilliant when beating Brazil at Limerick over Christmas and it is unwise to assume there was any fluke about that, in which case he should be placed at worst here.

3.07 Naas: Anstand

There were a couple of notable gambles in the Clonmel race in which Anstand was second, the others were well-beaten.

Paul Nolan’s charge travelled smoothly, was well clear of the third and looks absolutely blessed to be only 1lb higher on his sixth outing.

4.00 Limerick: Irish Blaze

In the Leopardstown race in which he was second last Sunday, I had two bets – Brideswell Lad and Tyre Kicker – so I was a nose off backing two horses in a race where they both touched 1-100 in-running, and were beaten.

It would have been just my luck had that happened, but Irish Blaze just failed after looking to hold no chance at all for much of the straight.

If he jumps better, he must have a great chance here.

4.52 Naas: The Tack Room

The wily John Kiely has real prospects of a Cheltenham Festival winner next week, and it would be a nice boost were he to win the Bar One Racing Leinster National with The Tack Room.

He landed a gamble stylishly at Fairyhouse and, with him being a strapping horse, this track should very much suit this strong stayer. He is markedly up in grade here but is unexposed, and he jumps brilliantly, too.
