New Delhi: India batter Suryakumar Yadav is likely to miss the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as he has been diagnosed with a sports hernia for which he will be flying to Munich, Germany to undergo a surgery. This also puts his entire domestic season in doubt. The prolific batter is known for his batting prowess in T20 cricket and recently led the Indian side to a series win against Australia in November last year.

He then led Team India to draw the T20Is against South Africa but suffered an ankle injury in the last game in Johannesburg. He will be missing the Afghanistan T20I series as well due to the same. Now, it has been revealed that the 33-year-old has been diagnosed with a sports hernia. This puts his IPL 2024 participation at stake where he represents the star franchise Mumbai Indians.

“SKY was recently diagnosed with a sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two to three days, he will fly to Munich, Germany, to get operated for it. It means that he certainly won’t be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL,” Times of India (TOI) quoted a BCCI source as saying.

“With the T20 World Cup in June, Surya will be given all the time to recover properly. He is crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup,” another source added.

What is sports hernia?

According to WebMD, a health and fitness guide, a sports hernia is a tear or strain of the muscle, ligament, or tendon in the groin or lower abdomen area. It isn’t necessary to play sports to get afflicted by sports hernia but it is more common in people who play sports. Despite the name, there’s no ‘true’ hernia involved in it. Medical professionals use the term athletic pubalgia but it’s also called ‘sportsman’s hernia’ or ‘Gilmore’s groin’.

Sports hernia tends to happen in more vigorous sports like soccer, football, ice hockey, and wrestling as these include the twisting of the pelvis when the feet are planted. This causes the groin’s soft tissue or the lower abdomen to get a tear.

Wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul had also undergone surgery in Germany for sports hernia in mid-2022 and also missed national duties for two months post-IPL that year.
