Toni Kroos returns to international football with Germany

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his international comeback and will play for Germany again starting in March.

The former World Cup winner announced on his Instagram this Thursday that he will be involved with Die Mannschaft once again, starting with the international friendlies this March.

“Guys, short and painless: I will play for Germany again from March”, the 34-year-old wrote.

He continued: “Why? Because I was asked by the national coach, I’m up for it and I’m sure that a lot more is possible with the team at the European Championships than most people just believe!”

Kroos’s last international game for Germany was back in Euro 2021 when his nation bowed out in the last 16 after a defeat to England.

However, Kroos has continued to pull the strings in Real Madrid’s midfield and clearly has a lot more to give despite his age.

It’s a huge boost for Germany who haven’t been stable since their exit from Euro 21.

Under Hansi Flick, Die Mannschaft failed to make it out of the group stages at the Qatar World Cup and continued to lose friendlies against opposition they are expected to beat.

Now under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, Germany are coming into a home tournament with trepidation more than optimism.

It’s clear that Nagelsmann is going to rely on experience coming into this tournament. He is only expected to be in charge throughout the tournament, so giving youngsters a chance isn’t exactly at the forefront of his mind.

While it says a lot about the state of upcoming German talent, it’s a big boost for their hopes at the Euros this summer.
